One swallow does not make a summer

One swallow does not make a summer – A cultural-scientific examination of new “lower house rites”.

For several years now, the idyllic Upper Austrian village of Aurach am Hongar has been home to some strange observations. Every March, always on the coldest days of the year, young people from the surrounding area come together to indulge in a “new generation” cult.

No one is deterred by ice and snow, freezing cold or even frostbite from playing a leading role in this magical event. The meeting point is the local soccer pitch, which is difficult to play on due to the icy grip of winter. The length of the collective warm-up phase, which can take on sectarian traits, depends on the weather conditions. The teams are pinned down by throwing a flat bird of prey (an ornithological peculiarity). A set of rules that is difficult to understand makes it possible for “everyone to play against no one”. Goals do not count, only the imitated flight of the swallows (Hirundinidae) is counted. As many swallows as possible should contribute to the awakening of spring! Because one swallow does not make a summer!
