Images of a commemorative search for traces An exhibition at the Mauthausen Visitor Center by Alexander Joechl, Hermann Lohninger and Chris Müller.
The starting point for the project was the idea that a human chain of 200,000 people shaking hands would be over 300 kilometers long. 200,000 people were imprisoned in the Mauthausen concentration camp. The distance between the former Mauthausen concentration camp and the former Reichsparteitag building in Nuremberg is exactly 329 kilometers by road.
The artists traveled this route and photographed the various forms of commemoration, monuments and memorials in the individual places along the way. The approximately 800 photos are now on display at the Mauthausen Visitor Center. In addition, a projection shows live images (from a webcam) of Linz’s main square. The main square in Linz was covered with granite slabs from Mauthausen as part of the redesign at the time. In addition, a video in documentary form shows the journey of the group of artists from Mauthausen to Nuremberg. The exhibition addresses the difficulty of the memory work of a generation that grew up after the Holocaust, of remembering the memories of the survivors. The exhibition was accompanied by a publication with contributions by: A. Assmann, M. Lehner, Jan Phillip Reemtsma, Robert Schindel and Heidemarie Uhl.
