European Salon of Good Hope

An evening full of new ideas at the Altes Theater Steyr. With Gerald Karner and Chris Müller – a star on the Steyr horizon, a development project of the city of Steyr and CMb.industries.

Europe, an old continent that is often labeled as tired and outdated, took center stage at the Altes Theater Steyr on 11 March 2026.

Brigadier and gentleman Gerald Karner, security expert and senior consultant at CMb.industries, presented his new book “Der unterschätzte Kontinent. Why the future belongs to Europe”.

CMb.industries and the city of Steyr jointly hosted an evening full of changing perspectives and critical reflection. Deputy Mayor Dr. Michael Schodermayer welcomed over 120 participants with the words that democracy and diversity are not possible without each other.

Europe’s strength lies in its diversity

In his work, Gerald Karner paints a positive picture of Europe that breaks away from common clichés. Instead of a continent lost in the past, he created a vision of a world region that sees its cultural and democratic diversity as a strategic advantage. According to Karner, Europe is not just a historical legacy, but a living organism that can play a leading role globally thanks to its diversity and innovative strength.

During the discussion, it became clear that Europe should and must no longer act as a supplicant.

The resources that Europe possesses, from its education to its cultural depth, are the building blocks for a new geopolitical self-assertion. However, this potential must be used with determination. Karner appealed to European society to become aware of its strengths and to use them with courage and foresight.

The fireside chat was not a classic book presentation, but rather a lively dialog about the future of Europe. Karner highlighted central theses of the book, including the question of how Europe can redefine its role in a world full of geopolitical tensions. A particularly striking moment of the evening was Karner’s comparison of Europe to a “sleeping giant”. While other world powers aggressively defend their positions and see Europe as an equal opponent, Europe has the chance to shine through cooperation and innovation. But this path is not a sure-fire success. It requires political cohesion and determination, a clear vision and the will to break through outdated systems.

The path to a new superpower

The event at the Altes Theater Steyr was a welcome wake-up call. In conversation with Gerald Karner, it became impressively clear that Europe not only has a history to tell, but also a future to shape. The evening made it clear that the old continent is anything but outdated. Europe’s ability lies in reinventing itself and using its diversity and innovation as a motor for progress and as an equal player vis-à-vis other superpowers. Europe is strong and this is where the greatest opportunity lies. The evening in Steyr was an inspiring step towards a new European self-confidence and perhaps also a small spark for a great movement.
