Press release, 10.12.2023
Artist, musician, artistic director of Theater Hausruck, founding director of Tabakfabrik Linz, NESTROY award winner, entrepreneur, real estate developer, pioneer of “digital humanism” and writer: in his self-deprecating and autobiographical first book “Achtet auf die Möwen” (Watch out for the seagulls), Chris Müller combines 13 chapters and almost 200 pages of memories from his childhood and thought-provoking notes from his wild Berlin years, tells of the rise of Theater Hausruck, his 4.135 days in the service of Tabakfabrik Linz and what prompted him to set off for new shores again.
The logbook guides readers through a concentrate of anecdotes, zeitgeist and everyday philosophy in time with the decades. The result is a plea for creative energy, daring, creativity and hope. An associative atlas for those who are on the move and rebellious, shipwrecked and searching, torn and wounded.
It is not only the self-deprecating and humorous tone that is remarkable, but also the many original cross-references, ranging from Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick” to Giacomo Casanova and Jonathan Harker to John F. Kennedy and a certain Friedrich von Ledebur, which make the book an extremely inspiring read.
Müller’s extraordinary biography inspires courage and a desire to try things out and be rebellious; it is a tribute to his many companions and to a life lived with passion: Having escaped from the army in his mother’s car and washed up on the Greek party island of Ios, the now 50-year-old eked out a living with little savings and odd jobs as a bouncer, met the love of his life and followed her to Berlin. There he eked out a living as a construction worker, asbestos disposal worker, film extra and stage manager for a rock band before returning to Upper Austria ten years later, studying at the University of the Arts, getting married and becoming the father of two children.
As co-founder and artistic director of Theater Hausruck, the son of a miner from Thomasroith first made headlines, was awarded the NESTROY Prize, among others, and in 2012 was given the unique opportunity to breathe new life into Tabakfabrik Linz as its founding director. The former cigarette factory is now regarded as an international best-practice example of the successful transformation of an industrial wasteland into a place of innovation. Müller’s development work is done – today, as CEO of CMb.industries GmbH, he uses his diverse experience and seismographic intuition to advise politicians and businesses with a particular focus on innovation ecologies and real estate with special requirements.
Chris Müller’s book ends with the first chapter from “Moby-Dick” – and underlines his credo of always setting out and reinventing himself, smelling land where there is no land yet.

Blurb:
Growing up in the miners’ milieu of provincial Upper Austria, confronted with a permanent change of address, hitchhiked from the army in his mother’s car and washed up on the Greek island of Ios, Chris Müller struggles along with little savings but big dreams.
He travels to Berlin for his first great love and only returns to Austria after ten years of being a rowdy and roadie. He studies art, wins NESTROY awards with Theater Hausruck and becomes the founding director of Tabakfabrik Linz.
He records the wild waves of his passions in this self-deprecating logbook, which guides readers through a concentrate of anecdotes, zeitgeist and everyday philosophy in time with the decades.
A plea for creative power, daring, creativity and hope. An associative atlas for those who are on the move and rebellious, shipwrecked and searching, torn and wounded.
